Day 5: POBR June 20, 2024

Day 5 June 20, 2024

The class was scheduled to wake up at 6:00am but no one started moving around until 6:30am. However, I waken up by the bird singing away at 5am. Early birds! Once everyone started moving around, we all had our breakfast and coffee. Then we jumped right into lab work at 7:30am. We took our water samples out for bacteria isolation. We took swaps from each water sample (Birdcreek, Snow plow creek, and Blockhouse creek) from the cultivated tubes and put them in agar plates to incubate for another 24-28hours.

After we finished up with our labs, we met up with the US Forest Service- Deschutes National Forest partners (pictured in figure 1). Partners included was Cynthia Anderson (assistant program manger), Alex Enna  (partnership management-fire management), and then Sophia zoll (Ameri core conservation educator) was our tour guide for the first trip. Our first trip into Lava land was in the Lava River Cave (pictured in figure 2). The lava river cave is where the lava flowed through from the Newberry volcano that erupted 83hundred years ago. The cave is roughly 2.2 miles roundtrip and is about 1.5 miles deep.

The second trip was Lava Butte (pictured in figure 3) which is just down the road from the cave. We took our lunch break then caught the shuttle to the top of the butte. The butte had amazing views of the other surrounding volcanos and buttes nearby. While we were up there, the fire lookout employee was nice enough to allow a few of us to go up to the lookout tower. He was kindly enough to show us how he reads the maps and reads the coordinates for any smoke (fires) that would be detected in the area. The third trip was to the upper Deschutes where we took the Trail to Benham Falls. To conclude the day, Dr. Black has a very nice friend in town who let us shower and then took us to a concert. The concert was called "Classical music in the wild." The music was really nice and relaxing. Very appreciated.
